Introducing the Rising Star award

The Australian Book Industry Awards is pleased to announce the inaugural Rising Star of the Year Award, which recognises emerging talent within the publishing industry.

This new award will be presented to a person whose record reflects ongoing excellence and growth in contribution to their profession. The nominee must be currently working in the Australian publishing industry, and have been part of the industry for less than 10 years as of 31 December 2017.

Michael Gordon-Smith, CEO of the Australian Publishers Association, says, ‘We often hear about the complex challenges publishers face. It’s exciting to have created an opportunity to promote the inspiring young people meeting them.’

‘As chair of the ABIA committee, and as someone who has a vested interest in nurturing talent in our industry, I’m delighted to launch the Rising Star of the Year Award. Australian publishing is filled with hardworking, passionate, gifted young people and this award acknowledges and rewards the outstanding contribution they make. They are the leaders of the future,’ says Justin Ractliffe, Joint Managing Director Hachette Australia.

The award is sponsored by McPherson’s Printing Group and includes a cash prize of $5,000 for the winner to spend on professional development. Richard Celarc, Executive Chairman of the Opus Group (owners of McPherson’s, Ligare Book Printers and Canprint), says, ‘McPherson’s is very proud to sponsor the ABIAs and Rising Star of the Year Award. Supporting this award is investing in the future of Australian publishing and it is an initiative that fits perfectly with our values of innovation and creative excellence.’

The Rising Star of the Year Award will be judged by the same esteemed panel of industry and corporate experts that will be judging the ABIA Business Awards, this year chaired by former owner and director of Allen & Unwin, Peter Eichhorn. The Business Awards will open for nominations on Wednesday 14 February, with categories consisting of Publisher of the Year, Small Publisher of the Year, Retailer of the Year and Independent Retailer of the Year.

The Australian publishing industry currently employs over 4,000 people across more than 1,000 businesses, generates over $2 billion dollars in revenue, and publishes 7,000 new titles annually.
